Dcu Reboot Is Further Teased in Superman Legacy Plot Synopsis

After confirming that James Gunn will direct the upcoming Superman reboot, Superman: Legacy, Warner Bros.Discovery has now published the initial synopsis of the DCU project. While some elements of Superman: Legacy remain a secret, such as who could be considered the last man of steel, the synopsis gives a glimpse of what Gunn and his fellow DC Studios chief Peter Safran have in store for the superhero icon. Check out the new plot summary for Superman: Legacy below.

“Superman Legacy” tells the story of Superman’s journey to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that considers kindness old-fashioned.”

Of course, Superman: Legacy will rely heavily on the “old-fashioned” good nature of the DC character, something that many thought was not-found in the Zack Snyder iteration. The outline even refers to “truth, justice and the American way”, a phrase that the character has largely leaved in recent years.

It is also interesting to note that the synopsis does not mention villains or conspiracies, but rather focuses on the Psychology of Superman, suggesting once again that Superman: Legacy will be inspired by Grant Morrison’s famous comic book series, All-Star Superman.

James Gunn to direct Superman: Legacy for DCU

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has now confirmed that he will direct Superman: Legacy for his new and (hopefully) improved DCU from producer Peter Safran. Working from a script he had written, Gunn took to social media yesterday to post a statement as well as confirmation that he would be bringing the new Man of Steel to the big screen.

“Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy, which will be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me that when he saw the release date, he started crying. I asked him why. He said, “Man, it’s Dad’s birthday.”I hadn’t noticed,” Gunn said in a series of Tweets. “I lost my father almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me when I was a child, but he supported my love of comics and my love of cinema and I wouldn’t be making this Movie now without him.”

Gunn went on to refer to the offer DC made to him years ago to direct another Superman project. “It’s been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – at first I said no because I didn’t have a unique, fun and emotional way, giving Superman the dignity he deserved. Then, a little less than a year ago, I saw a path inside that focused on Superman’s legacy in many ways — how his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

Adding that he was “hesitant to direct, despite the constant harassment from Peter Safran and others (sorry, Peter),” Gunn explained that he slowly realized his affection for the script he had written. “But the long and short of it is that I love this script and I am incredibly excited when we start this journey. #UpUpandAway,” he concluded.

Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
