Kingdom Come Movie Bruce Campbell in Playing Superman

If James Gunn and Peter Safran want to direct a live-action adaptation of DC’s comic book series Kingdom Come, B-movie legend Bruce Campbell wants the two to call him. Originally published in 1996, the Kingdom Come comics by Mark Waid and Alex Ross are set in an alternate future with members of the Justice League who are now decades old. Retired superheroes, including an elderly Superman, regroup as a new wave of “superheroes” begins to blur the line between what makes them better than the supervillains they thwart.

No live-action adaptation of Kingdom Come has officially been made, although Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) drew inspiration from the former Superman when reprising the role for an appearance in the Arrowverse’s crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. After Gunn and Safran were hired to pilot the ship at DC Studios, the former continued to share artwork from the Kingdom Come comics, teasing that he was making “plans” for the DCU by taking inspiration from the comics. This has obviously fueled speculation that a Kingdom Come project is in early development, although it has not been officially announced at the moment.

Nevertheless, one fan took to Twitter to insist that Campbell play Superman in a Kingdom Come adaptation. The groovy himself took note of this and re-tweeted the post, adding with his own caption: “Send my number.”It makes it clear that Campbell wants his name in the hat when Gunn and Safran try to cast an older Superman for the teased Kingdom Come project. The post has a lot of fans who are happy about this opportunity.

This isn’t the first time Campbell has teased his interest in this role. In 2019, there were similar fans who asked Campbell to play the role of the Man of Steel in his Golden Years. Campbell shared a picture of himself at the time, tweeting in response to the fantasy cast: “I’m ready for Geezer Superman.”

What happens next for The Man of Steel on the Big Screen?
We’ll have to wait and see what happens with the Kingdom Come project. It would presumably be a DC Elseworlds story, which means it’s set outside the main continuity of DCU, much like Batman and Joker. What we do know is that Gunn is currently working on Superman: Legacy, a movie that will reboot this Man of Steel for DCU, with a new actor playing the role. This actor has not yet been announced.

Gunn also said that a separate Superman project was in the works, which was written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J. J. Abrams. Although Gunn has not yet seen a script, he has stated that he will not put the film on hold just because he is working on Superman: Legacy. It would just be treated like a DC Elseworlds story.
