Superman Legacy Entered Early Creation James Gunn Uncovers

To celebrate Superman’s birthday, which commemorates the Man of steel’s debut in Action Comics, the filmmaker and co-director of DC Studios, James Gunn, announced on social networks on April 18, 1938 that the next reboot, Superman: Legacy, had now entered early production. The director shared a photo of the script that Gunn wrote himself, also revealing that “the costumes, production design and more are now up and running.”

While it may be a while before we see any of these costumes or receive casting news, a recent recap for Superman: Legacy gave a glimpse of how Gunn and fellow DC Studios head Peter Safran will approach the comic book icon.

“Superman Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas,” the official synopsis reads. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that considers kindness old-fashioned.”

To the disappointment of many, Man of Steel and Justice League Star Henry Cavill will not be returning for Superman: Legacy, with Gunn instead focusing on a much younger version of the DC superhero. While there had once been news of a Man of Steel 2, Superman is rebooted instead and the first chapter of the recalibrated DCU is launched.

James Gunn will write and direct Superman: Legacy

After much speculation, James Gunn confirmed last month that he would actually write and direct Superman: Legacy. “Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy, which will be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me that when he saw the release date, he started crying. I asked him why. He said, “Man, it’s Dad’s birthday.”I hadn’t noticed it,” the director said at the time.

He went on to reveal that he was lucky enough to direct a Superman project years ago. But while he couldn’t “get into it” at the time, he has now found it and can’t wait to bring it to life. “It’s been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn’t have a way that felt unique, fun and emotional and gave Superman the dignity he deserved,” Gunn said. “Then, a little less than a year ago, I saw a path inside that focused on Superman’s legacy in many ways — how his Kryptonian aristocratic parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and what choices he makes.”

Superman: Legacy will be presented with the superhero team movie the Authority, a Batman project called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl release called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, a Wonder Woman prequel series called Paradise Lost, the Creature Commandos animated series, and more.

Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
